Fei-Fei Li

Fei-Fei Li occupies a rare position in artificial intelligence: she is both the field's most cited academic pioneer and, in her sixties decade of relevance, a serious startup founder chasing the next paradigm shift. Born in Beijing in 1976 and raised from her teenage years in Parsippany, New Jersey, Li's path to the top of data science ran through her parents' dry-cleaning shop before it ran through Princeton physics and a Caltech doctorate in electrical engineering.

Her defining contribution came at Princeton and then Stanford, where from 2007 she and her students built ImageNet, a painstakingly labelled database of millions of photographs organised across tens of thousands of categories. Unglamorous at the time, ImageNet became the fuel that, in 2012, allowed a deep neural network called AlexNet to shatter previous records on an annual recognition challenge — a moment widely credited with igniting the modern deep-learning boom. Without that dataset, the trajectory of computer vision, and arguably of generative AI more broadly, would look very different.

Li went on to direct the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and, in 2018, co-founded the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), positioning herself as one of the field's foremost advocates for AI that augments rather than replaces human judgement. A brief spell as Chief Scientist of AI/ML at Google Cloud between 2017 and 2018 gave her direct experience of deploying research at industrial scale, while her nonprofit AI4ALL has spent years trying to widen who gets to build the technology.

In 2024 she stepped back from day-to-day teaching to co-found World Labs, a startup dedicated to 'spatial intelligence' — AI systems that understand and generate three-dimensional environments rather than just text or flat images. The company raised over $200 million in its first round at a reported valuation above $1 billion, and by 2026 had shipped Marble, a model that turns images or text prompts into explorable 3D worlds, alongside a $1.23 billion valuation round that confirmed investor appetite for her thesis that the next frontier of AI is physical and spatial rather than purely linguistic.

Throughout, Li has remained an outspoken voice for independent oversight of AI development, warning publicly in 2026 that the pace of deployment is outrunning society's capacity to govern it. That combination — a scientist whose earlier work quietly reshaped an entire discipline, now building the commercial infrastructure for its next act, while lobbying for guardrails on the industry she helped create — is why she remains one of the most consequential figures in data and AI.
