Ion Stoica

Ion Stoica is a Romanian-American computer scientist and entrepreneur who sits at the intersection of academia and Silicon Valley as one of the most prolific founders in modern data infrastructure. A professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-director of its influential AMPLab (and its successor, RISELab), Stoica has spent two decades turning research prototypes into category-defining companies, most notably Databricks and Anyscale.

Born in Romania, Stoica earned a master's degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest before moving to the United States, where he completed a PhD at Carnegie Mellon University in 2000 under Hui Zhang, working on networking systems including early peer-to-peer architectures. He joined Berkeley's faculty the same year and has remained there ever since, building a research group renowned for translating systems research directly into industry.

Stoica's entrepreneurial track record began with Conviva, a video-streaming analytics company he co-founded in 2006. It was his role at AMPLab, however, that proved most consequential: the lab incubated Apache Spark, the distributed data-processing engine that reshaped big-data analytics. In 2013, Stoica co-founded Databricks with the Spark creators to commercialise that work, serving as chief executive before becoming executive chairman in 2016 when Ali Ghodsi took over as CEO.

Under that leadership structure, Databricks grew into one of the most valuable private companies in software, reaching valuations north of $100 billion by 2025 on the back of demand for its 'lakehouse' data and AI platform. Stoica went on to co-found a second major company, Anyscale, built around Ray, the open-source framework for scaling machine learning and AI workloads that has become critical infrastructure for large language model training.

Stoica's academic honours include the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award, a Sloan Research Fellowship, and the SIGOPS Mark Weiser Award, alongside the ACM SIGCOMM Test of Time Award for his early networking research. In 2021 he donated $25 million to Berkeley to support computing and data-science initiatives. Forbes has ranked him among the wealthiest Romanian-born entrepreneurs, reflecting his rare position as both a working professor and a builder of multi-billion-dollar infrastructure companies.
