Why they’re on the list
As CEO of AWS, Garman controls the operations, product direction and AI infrastructure strategy of the world's largest cloud computing platform, a central pillar of global data infrastructure.
Matt Garman is the chief executive officer of Amazon Web Services, appointed to the role in June 2024, succeeding Adam Selipsky and continuing a lineage of AWS leadership that traces back to Andy Jassy, the unit's founding CEO. Garman grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona, and studied industrial engineering at Stanford University for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees, later adding an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.
Garman's connection to AWS predates the business itself in any recognisable modern form: he interned there in 2005, while still pursuing his MBA, when the group had only a handful of people working in sales, and joined full-time in 2006 as one of AWS's earliest product managers. Over nearly two decades at the company, he built and led some of its most foundational services, including Amazon Elastic Block Store, and later ran AWS's sales, marketing and global services organisation before taking the top job.
As CEO, Garman has positioned AWS's strategy around giving customers a wide choice of AI models rather than betting on a single foundation model provider, while continuing to expand Amazon's own custom silicon, including the Trainium and Inferentia chip families designed to reduce dependence on Nvidia GPUs and lower the cost of AI training and inference at scale. He has repeatedly described security as AWS's 'job zero', a phrase that has become a hallmark of his public communications.
Garman inherited an AWS business facing intensified competition from Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, both of which moved faster in the early stages of the generative AI boom, and has focused on accelerating AWS's own AI infrastructure investment, including massive capital spending on new data centres and partnerships such as AWS's continued backing of Anthropic. His deep product and engineering background within AWS, rather than an external hire, was seen as a signal of continuity in Amazon's cloud strategy.
Outside AWS, Garman has supported educational and community initiatives including First Tee, One Acre Fund and Rainier Scholars, and is known internally for an operational, detail-oriented style shaped by his long tenure building AWS's core infrastructure products from the ground up.
