Pony Ma

Ma Huateng, known internationally as Pony Ma, controls one of the largest repositories of consumer and social data on earth. As chairman and chief executive of Tencent Holdings, he oversees WeChat, the super-app that mediates messaging, payments, commerce and increasingly AI services for more than a billion users, alongside a gaming and cloud empire that spans the globe.

Ma studied computer science at Shenzhen University before working at a paging-technology firm. In 1998 he co-founded Tencent with four partners, launching the OICQ messaging service (later QQ) that became China's dominant instant-messaging platform through the early 2000s. Tencent listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2004, giving it capital to expand into games, media and payments.

The decisive move came in 2011 with the launch of WeChat, which fused messaging, social networking, mini-programmes and mobile payments into a single platform now central to daily life in China. WeChat Pay, alongside Tencent's gaming division (including stakes in Riot Games and Supercell), made Tencent one of the most valuable technology companies in Asia and a vast aggregator of transactional and behavioural data.

Under Ma, Tencent has pushed into cloud computing, enterprise software and, since 2023, generative AI through its Hunyuan model family, embedding AI assistants across WeChat and its cloud business. Tencent has also expanded internationally through gaming investments and cloud infrastructure, extending its data reach beyond China even as it operates within the country's tightening data-governance regime.

Ma has generally kept a lower public profile than some peers, rarely giving interviews, but wields outsized influence through Tencent's investment arm, which holds stakes across gaming, fintech, e-commerce and AI start-ups worldwide. His decisions on platform policy and data access shape norms for how thousands of Chinese apps and their user data interact with Tencent's ecosystem.
