Salvatore Sanfilippo

Salvatore Sanfilippo, known widely by his handle "antirez", is the Italian programmer who created Redis, the open-source in-memory key-value store that has become one of the most widely deployed pieces of data infrastructure in the world. Born in 1977, Sanfilippo moved to Palermo at seventeen intending to study architecture, but drifted into computer science and self-taught systems programming, a path that shaped his famously pragmatic, code-first approach to software.

Before Redis, Sanfilippo had already built a reputation in the security and networking community, publishing the idle scan TCP port-scanning technique in 1998 and writing hping, a widely used packet-crafting tool. That grounding in low-level systems work fed directly into Redis, which he began building in 2009 to solve real-time scaling problems at his own startup, LLOOGG. The project's speed, simplicity and elegant data structures made it an instant favourite among engineers.

Redis spread rapidly through the 2010s, becoming a default choice for caching, session storage, queues, leaderboards and real-time analytics at companies from Twitter and GitHub to Stripe and Snapchat. Sanfilippo led development as its "Benevolent Dictator for Life" through several corporate sponsors, including VMware, Pivotal and eventually Redis Labs, while maintaining an unusually direct and personal relationship with the developer community through his blog and mailing-list writing.

In June 2020 he stepped back from maintaining Redis to pursue other interests, including writing fiction, but the project he created had by then become foundational internet plumbing, with Redis-compatible engines offered by every major cloud provider. His decision to step away, and the subsequent 2024 licensing controversy that spawned the Valkey fork, underscored how central his stewardship had been to the project's culture.

Sanfilippo returned to Redis Inc. in December 2024 as an evangelist and technical contributor, working on new data structures such as the vector set type for AI similarity search, and continuing to champion open-source principles within the project. His career illustrates how a single, well-designed piece of infrastructure, built by one determined engineer, can end up quietly running underneath a large share of the world's data-driven applications.
