Tomer Shiran

Tomer Shiran is the co-founder and chief product officer of Dremio, a company he built to make data lakes queryable at the speed and simplicity of a traditional data warehouse, without the cost and lock-in of proprietary storage. Before starting Dremio, Shiran spent years at MapR Technologies, one of the pioneering Hadoop distribution companies, where he rose to vice-president of product and played a central role in shaping how enterprises adopted big-data infrastructure in the 2010s.

Drawing on that experience, Shiran co-founded Dremio in 2015 with a thesis that would prove prescient: as cloud object storage such as Amazon S3 became cheap and ubiquitous, the winning data architecture would be one that let analysts and data scientists query data directly where it lived, rather than first loading it into a costly, siloed warehouse. Dremio's platform, built around open table formats such as Apache Iceberg, positioned the company at the centre of the 'data lakehouse' movement alongside rivals like Databricks and Snowflake.

As chief product officer, Shiran has driven Dremio's technical roadmap through several major inflection points, including its embrace of Apache Arrow for high-performance in-memory analytics — a project he helped popularise — and its pivot toward supporting open-source Iceberg tables as the industry standardised around open formats rather than proprietary storage layers. The company raised funding at a valuation of roughly $2 billion as its lakehouse strategy gained traction with large enterprises.

Shiran brought in industry veteran Billy Bosworth as Dremio's chief executive in 2019, a move that let him concentrate on product and technical strategy while Bosworth scaled the go-to-market organisation. That leadership split has continued through Dremio's expansion into AI-era workloads, including a 2026 partnership that saw enterprise software giant SAP integrate Dremio's lakehouse technology alongside AI-native data tooling into its own data platform.

A frequent conference speaker and prolific technical writer, Shiran has been one of the more visible advocates for open, vendor-neutral data architecture, arguing publicly that enterprises should resist re-creating the lock-in of the data-warehouse era inside the new generation of AI and analytics platforms.
