Usama Fayyad

Usama Fayyad is widely credited as the researcher who helped define the term 'Knowledge Discovery in Databases' (KDD) and popularised 'data mining' as a distinct scientific discipline in the early 1990s. Trained at the University of Michigan, where he earned a PhD in engineering along with multiple degrees in electrical and computer engineering and mathematics, Fayyad began his career applying machine learning to astronomical datasets at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, work that helped establish automated pattern discovery as a serious scientific tool.

In 1996 he moved to Microsoft Research to lead its data mining and exploration group, further building the intellectual infrastructure of the field. That same period saw him co-found the KDD conference series and ACM SIGKDD, the professional body that remains the leading academic venue for data mining and knowledge discovery research. He remains the only person to have received both the ACM SIGKDD Service Award and Innovation Award, a recognition of his dual role as institution-builder and technical innovator.

Fayyad moved from research into industry leadership in the 2000s, co-founding digiMine (later Audience Science) and DMX Group before Yahoo! acquired the latter in 2004. At Yahoo! he served as the company's first Chief Data Officer and Executive Vice President, overseeing the data strategy behind one of the era's largest online advertising and audience-data businesses — a role widely seen as one of the first true 'Chief Data Officer' positions in the technology industry.

After Yahoo!, Fayyad founded Open Insights, an advisory and investment practice focused on data strategy, and later served as Global Chief Data Officer at Barclays Bank, bringing his data science background into financial services. He has also chaired Oasis500, a Jordan-based seed accelerator and venture fund supporting technology start-ups across the Middle East, extending his influence into entrepreneurship and regional tech development.

Across academia, big tech and finance, Fayyad's throughline has been building the scaffolding — conferences, professional societies, corporate data functions — that allowed data science to mature from an academic niche into a board-level discipline. He continues to advise start-ups and speak on AI and data strategy, and is recognised as a Fellow of both AAAI and ACM for his contributions to the field.
