Why they’re on the list
Wang built Scale AI into critical data-labelling infrastructure for the AI industry and now runs Meta's frontier AI effort, giving him unusual influence over both AI data supply and model development.
Alexandr Wang dropped out of MIT in 2016 to co-found Scale AI with Lucy Guo, building a business around a deceptively unglamorous problem: producing the enormous volumes of high-quality labelled data that machine learning models need to train. Scale's human-in-the-loop data pipelines and evaluation tools quietly became infrastructure for a huge share of the AI industry, from autonomous vehicle programmes to large language model developers and the U.S. Department of Defense.
By 2021 that business had made Wang, then 24, the world's youngest self-made billionaire as Scale AI's valuation reached $7.3 billion; it later rose far higher as demand for training and evaluation data exploded alongside the generative AI boom. Wang used the platform to become an increasingly prominent voice on AI policy, testifying before a U.S. House Armed Services subcommittee and pushing for closer government-industry cooperation on AI adoption and safety.
In June 2025, Meta invested roughly $14 billion for a stake in Scale AI and brought Wang in-house as Chief AI Officer, putting him in charge of the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs, the unit tasked with restoring Meta's competitiveness in frontier AI research after a string of high-profile setbacks. The move was one of the largest and most unusual talent acquisitions in Silicon Valley history, effectively buying both a company and its 28-year-old founder's judgment on how to build advanced AI systems.
Wang's ascent reflects a broader shift in where power sits in the AI data supply chain: not only with the labs training frontier models, but with the companies and individuals who control the quality, provenance and scale of the data feeding them. His continued board seat at Scale AI, alongside his new mandate at Meta, gives him rare visibility across both the data-supply and model-development layers of the industry.
A vocal advocate of an unapologetically competitive, merit-driven approach to AI talent and of maintaining Western leadership in the U.S.-China AI race, Wang has become one of the youngest figures with genuine influence over how the next generation of AI systems is built, evaluated and deployed at global scale.
