Why they’re on the list
Slootman built Snowflake into the dominant public cloud data platform, taking it through the largest software IPO in history, and remains chairman shaping its strategy.
Frank Slootman is the Dutch-American executive who built a reputation as Silicon Valley's foremost turnaround and scale-up specialist before taking Snowflake through the largest software initial public offering in history. Born in the Netherlands and educated in economics and business administration at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Slootman moved to the United States and spent his early career in enterprise software before taking his first chief executive role at Data Domain in 2003, where he rescued the storage company from the brink of failure and took it public in 2007.
He went on to lead ServiceNow from 2011, transforming it from a niche IT help-desk vendor into a broad enterprise workflow platform and taking it public in 2012, one of the defining cloud-software listings of that decade. Slootman's playbook, combining blunt operational discipline with an unsentimental focus on growth metrics, became widely studied within the software industry and was later laid out in his books, including the bestselling 'Amp It Up.'
In 2019, Slootman was brought in as chief executive of Snowflake, then a fast-growing but still-private cloud data warehousing company, to prepare it for public markets. He led Snowflake through its September 2020 initial public offering, which valued the company at roughly $70 billion on its first trading day, the largest software IPO on record at the time, backed by investment from Berkshire Hathaway. Under his leadership, Snowflake's consumption-based pricing model and multi-cloud data platform became the benchmark competitors were measured against, most directly Databricks.
Slootman announced his retirement as Snowflake's chief executive in February 2024, a transition that briefly unsettled investors, and moved into the role of executive chairman of the board, where he has remained involved in strategic direction while ceding day-to-day operational control to successor Sridhar Ramaswamy. His continued presence on the board keeps him closely tied to the company's positioning in an increasingly AI-driven data infrastructure market.
Across three companies and three IPOs, Slootman is credited with an unusually consistent record of converting technically strong but commercially underdeveloped businesses into disciplined, high-growth public companies. That track record, combined with his outspoken views on management and accountability, has made him one of the most closely watched operators in enterprise technology, even as he has stepped back from full-time executive duties.
