Andrej Karpathy

Andrej Karpathy is one of the most recognisable figures in modern artificial intelligence, prized as much for his ability to explain deep learning as for his research contributions to it. Born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, in 1986, he emigrated to Canada with his family as a teenager and went on to study computer science and physics at the University of Toronto before completing a master's at the University of British Columbia.

Karpathy earned his PhD at Stanford University in 2015 under computer vision pioneer Fei-Fei Li, and while there authored and taught the influential CS231n course on convolutional neural networks, a course credited with training a generation of deep learning practitioners. That same year he joined OpenAI as a founding research scientist, helping shape the young lab's early research culture.

In 2017 Karpathy left to become Tesla's director of AI and Autopilot Vision, where he built the computer vision systems underpinning the company's self-driving efforts and popularised the concept of the 'operating system' analogy for neural-network-driven software. He returned briefly to OpenAI in 2023 before departing again in early 2024 to found Eureka Labs, an AI-native education venture aimed at making advanced technical teaching scalable.

Throughout, Karpathy has cultivated an unusually large public following through his YouTube lectures, open-source projects such as nanoGPT and llm.c, and coinages including 'vibe coding', which entered mainstream tech vocabulary in 2025. In May 2026 he joined Anthropic to lead pretraining research, a move widely read as a significant vote of confidence in the company's approach to frontier model development.

Karpathy's influence rests less on any single breakthrough than on his rare combination of elite research pedigree, hands-on engineering at scale, and an unmatched gift for translating frontier AI concepts for practitioners and the public alike, making him a genuine bridge between AI's research and applied worlds.
