Andy Jassy

Andy Jassy is the president and chief executive officer of Amazon, having taken over from founder Jeff Bezos in July 2021. Born in Scarsdale, New York, in 1968, Jassy studied government at Harvard College before returning to Harvard Business School for an MBA. He joined Amazon in 1997, in the company's early years as an online bookseller, and spent the following decades helping to build out its technology infrastructure businesses.

Jassy's most significant legacy predates his Amazon CEO tenure: he is widely credited as the architect of Amazon Web Services, having worked with Bezos from around 2003 to conceive of selling Amazon's internal computing infrastructure as a service to outside businesses. AWS launched in 2006 and, under Jassy's leadership as its long-serving CEO, grew into the largest cloud computing platform in the world, effectively inventing the modern cloud infrastructure-as-a-service market that Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud subsequently raced to match.

AWS's dominance made Jassy one of the most important architects of global data infrastructure long before he became Amazon's overall chief executive, since AWS underpins the computing, storage and increasingly the AI infrastructure of a vast share of the internet's businesses, from start-ups to government agencies. When he succeeded Bezos as Amazon CEO in 2021, he brought that cloud-infrastructure mindset to the whole company, including a heavy subsequent emphasis on generative AI.

Since becoming CEO, Jassy has steered Amazon into massive capital investment in AI infrastructure, including custom silicon such as Trainium and Inferentia chips designed to reduce reliance on Nvidia, and major strategic partnerships and investments involving Anthropic and, more recently, expanded commitments with OpenAI. He has also pushed Amazon through significant cost discipline and layoffs while continuing to expand AWS's data-centre footprint globally.

Jassy was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and named to Time's TIME100 AI list in 2025, recognition of his dual role in both inventing the cloud computing model and now directing one of the three hyperscalers racing to build the infrastructure for the AI era. He lives in the Seattle area with his family.
