Sundar Pichai

Sundar Pichai sits atop one of the largest accumulations of data and computing infrastructure in human history. As chief executive of both Alphabet Inc. and its flagship subsidiary Google, he oversees Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Google Cloud and the Gemini family of AI models — a portfolio that touches billions of people daily and processes an almost unfathomable volume of information every second.

Born in Madurai, India, in 1972, Pichai studied metallurgical engineering at IIT Kharagpur before earning a master's in materials science at Stanford University and an MBA from the Wharton School. After a stint at McKinsey & Company, he joined Google in 2004 as a product manager, working on the Google Toolbar before taking on Chrome, where he pushed the browser from a niche upstart to global dominance.

His rise through Google was steady and technical rather than flashy: he took charge of Android in 2013, folding Google's mobile and browser efforts together, and in 2015 was named CEO of Google itself as part of the restructuring that created Alphabet as a holding company. He became CEO of Alphabet in December 2019, succeeding co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and consolidating authority over the company's data-driven core businesses and its more speculative moonshot ventures.

Under Pichai, Google Cloud has grown into a serious challenger to Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, built on the same data-centre and custom silicon (TPU) infrastructure that powers Search and Gemini. He has repeatedly reoriented the company around artificial intelligence, declaring Google an 'AI-first' company as early as 2016 and later overseeing the aggressive build-out of Gemini models, data-centre capacity and custom chips to compete with OpenAI and Microsoft.

Pichai has also become a prominent public voice on AI governance and regulation, testifying before the US Congress and engaging with policymakers worldwide on data privacy, antitrust and AI safety. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian honours, in 2022, reflecting his stature as one of the most influential technology leaders of Indian origin on the world stage.
