Ilya Sutskever

Ilya Sutskever is among the most decorated researchers in modern deep learning, a scientist whose work has repeatedly redefined what neural networks can do. Born in the Soviet Union in 1986 and raised partly in Israel before his family emigrated to Canada, he studied at the University of Toronto, earning his bachelor's, master's and PhD in computer science under the supervision of Geoffrey Hinton.

In 2012, alongside Hinton and fellow student Alex Krizhevsky, Sutskever co-created AlexNet, the convolutional neural network whose landslide win in the ImageNet competition is widely regarded as the spark that ignited the modern deep learning boom. The trio's startup, DNNResearch, was acquired by Google later that year, and Sutskever joined Google Brain, where he contributed to early sequence-to-sequence learning techniques that underpin later advances in machine translation and language modelling.

In 2015 Sutskever co-founded OpenAI as chief scientist, a position from which he helped drive the research programme behind GPT-series language models and other advances that established OpenAI as a leader in generative AI. His tenure there ended amid controversy in November 2023, when he took part in the OpenAI board's brief removal of chief executive Sam Altman, a decision he later said he regretted; he left the company in May 2024.

Weeks later Sutskever co-founded Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), a research lab dedicated solely to developing superintelligent AI safely, deliberately structured to avoid near-term commercial products or distractions. He became chief executive in July 2025, and the company has since raised funding at a valuation reported around $32 billion and struck a long-term partnership with Nvidia to scale its compute.

Sutskever's influence spans the full arc of the deep learning era, from the foundational breakthrough of AlexNet through the founding of OpenAI to his current, closely watched bet that safety-first research can still compete at the frontier of AI capability.
