Zhang Yiming

Zhang Yiming is the founder and chairman of ByteDance, the Beijing-based technology group behind Douyin, TikTok and Toutiao, and arguably the single individual most responsible for proving that recommendation algorithms built on mass behavioural data could out-compete human curation at global scale. Born in 1983 in Longyan, Fujian province, he studied software and microelectronics engineering at Nankai University, graduating in 2005 into China's fast-growing internet sector.

Zhang cut his teeth as an early engineer at the travel search start-up Kuxun before founding the real-estate search site 99fang.com in 2009. Neither venture made him famous, but both sharpened an obsession that would define his career: using data-driven personalisation to match content and information to individual users far more precisely than editors or portals could manage. That obsession became ByteDance, which he founded in March 2012.

The company's first hit, the news aggregator Toutiao, used machine learning to rank articles by predicted individual interest rather than editorial judgement, a model Zhang then exported into short video with Douyin in 2016 and its international twin TikTok in 2017. The 2018 acquisition and merger of Musical.ly turbocharged TikTok's global expansion, and by the early 2020s ByteDance's recommendation engine had become the most studied and most copied piece of consumer software architecture in the world, reshaping products from Instagram Reels to YouTube Shorts.

Zhang stepped down as chief executive in November 2021, handing day-to-day management to co-founder Liang Rubo while retaining chairmanship and, crucially, majority voting control. He has since focused on ByteDance's AI ambitions, including its Doubao large language model family, even as the company navigated years of geopolitical pressure over TikTok's US operations that culminated in a restructuring of the app's American ownership. Zhang has repeatedly ranked as China's richest person, with a fortune built almost entirely on the data infrastructure he designed.

His influence endures less through public statements, which remain rare, than through the sheer scale of the behavioural data his platforms process daily and the algorithmic template the industry now treats as standard. Few individuals have shaped how global data about human attention and preference is collected, modelled and monetised as thoroughly as Zhang Yiming.
