Kirk Borne

Kirk Borne spent nearly two decades as an astrophysicist at NASA, where he worked on data systems for major space science missions and served as Data Archive Project Scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope. That work, managing and mining vast astronomical datasets long before 'big data' entered common usage, made him one of the early practitioners of what he later helped name 'astroinformatics' — the application of data science methods to astronomy.

After NASA, Borne spent twelve years as a professor of astrophysics and computational science at George Mason University, where he helped design graduate and undergraduate data science curricula, training a generation of students in statistical and computational methods for handling large-scale scientific data. This academic period cemented his transition from bench scientist to educator and communicator of data science principles.

Borne joined Booz Allen Hamilton in 2015, serving for six years as Principal Data Scientist, Data Science Fellow and Executive Advisor, applying his scientific background to government and commercial data strategy at scale. During this period he also built a substantial public profile as a speaker, writer and social media commentator on data science, analytics and artificial intelligence, becoming one of the most-followed voices in the field on platforms such as LinkedIn and X.

He has since founded the Data Leadership Group and taken on the role of Chief Science Officer at DataPrime, a start-up focused on data-intensive professional training, while continuing to advise AI start-ups and speak internationally on data and AI trends. He is a Fellow of the American Astronomical Society and the International Astrostatistics Association, recognitions of his lifelong contributions to astronomy and data-intensive science.

Borne's influence today rests less on a single technical breakthrough than on his sustained role as a translator — moving big data and AI concepts from specialist science into business and public understanding. He is regularly named among the world's top influencers in data science, analytics and AI, reflecting a career that bridges astrophysics, academia, consulting and public thought leadership.
