Nandan Nilekani

Nandan Nilekani occupies a rare position in the world of data: he is both a corporate technology leader and the architect of the largest biometric identification system ever built. As co-founder of Infosys and later chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), he has shaped how hundreds of millions of people are identified, verified and served by both government and private enterprise.

Nilekani co-founded Infosys in 1981 alongside N. R. Narayana Murthy and five colleagues, helping turn a Pune-based start-up into one of India's largest IT services exporters. He served as chief executive from 2002 to 2007, a period in which revenue grew roughly sixfold to around $3 billion, cementing Infosys's reputation for global delivery and corporate governance.

In 2009 he left day-to-day corporate life to lead UIDAI at cabinet rank, building Aadhaar, the world's largest biometric identity programme, which today covers well over a billion Indians. Aadhaar underpins India's welfare payments, banking know-your-customer checks and the broader 'India Stack' of digital public infrastructure that has become a global reference model for digital identity and data-driven governance.

He returned to Infosys as non-executive chairman in August 2017 after a period of boardroom turmoil, restoring stability to the company's leadership. He has continued to advise on national data and technology policy, including India's approach to data protection and open digital infrastructure, and in July 2026 was asked by the government to lead a task force reforming the country's national examination systems.

Nilekani's influence rests less on a single product than on infrastructure: Aadhaar and India Stack have made identity, payments and data-sharing consent programmable at national scale, a model widely studied by other governments. Through the EkStep Foundation and other philanthropic vehicles, he also funds education and public-data initiatives, extending his reach beyond Infosys and government into civil society.
