Why they’re on the list
Benioff created the cloud CRM category that made customer data centrally manageable for enterprises, and is now driving Salesforce's Data Cloud and Agentforce push to make that data the substrate for enterprise AI.
Marc Benioff founded Salesforce in 1999 from a rented San Francisco apartment after thirteen years at Oracle, where he had become the company's youngest vice president. Salesforce's pitch, delivered under the slogan 'The End of Software', was that customer relationship management could be delivered entirely over the internet rather than installed on corporate servers, a then-radical bet that effectively created the software-as-a-service industry.
That bet made Salesforce the dominant CRM platform globally and turned Benioff into one of enterprise software's most recognisable figures, known for combining aggressive growth ambitions with public commitments to stakeholder capitalism, philanthropy and San Francisco civic life. Salesforce's headquarters tower has become a literal fixture of the San Francisco skyline and the company one of the Bay Area's largest employers.
Benioff became sole CEO again in November 2022 after a period as co-CEO with Bret Taylor, and has since steered Salesforce's pivot toward positioning its vast stores of customer data as the foundation for enterprise AI, launching Agentforce and other AI-agent products built on Salesforce's Data Cloud. He has argued publicly and repeatedly that unified, well-governed customer data, not model size alone, will determine which companies win the AI era.
Alongside running Salesforce, Benioff owns Time magazine, which he and his wife Lynne purchased in 2018, giving him an unusual dual perch across enterprise technology and media. He has also become an increasingly prominent voice warning about AI risks and pushing for more responsible deployment, even as Salesforce races competitors including Microsoft to embed AI agents across enterprise workflows.
Through Salesforce's scale, its Data Cloud platform, and Benioff's own outspoken presence at events such as Dreamforce, he remains one of the most influential executives shaping how large enterprises think about organising and activating their own data for the AI age.
