Why they’re on the list
Nate Silver popularised probabilistic forecasting for a mass audience, turning statistical modelling into mainstream political and cultural literacy. His FiveThirtyEight model and bestselling books remain reference points for how data-driven prediction is communicated to the public.
Nate Silver built his reputation on a simple but radical idea: that rigorous statistical modelling, applied honestly to messy real-world data, beats gut instinct and punditry. Trained as an economist at the University of Chicago, he first made his name not in politics but in baseball, developing the PECOTA system for forecasting player performance while working at Baseball Prospectus in the early 2000s. That grounding in probabilistic modelling would define his entire career.
In 2008 Silver launched FiveThirtyEight, a blog dedicated to applying statistical rigour to American electoral politics. Its breakout moment came that November, when his model correctly called the outcome in 49 of 50 states in the presidential election. Four years later he went one better, calling all 50 states and the District of Columbia correctly in the 2012 race, cementing his status as the most trusted forecaster in American political journalism.
FiveThirtyEight was acquired by the New York Times in 2010 and later moved to ESPN and then ABC News, with Silver serving as editor-in-chief throughout its expansion into sports, economics and popular culture coverage. Under his direction the site became a template for data journalism worldwide, training a generation of journalists and analysts to think in terms of probabilities and uncertainty rather than false certainty.
Silver left ABC News in 2023 and relaunched independently with the Silver Bulletin newsletter on Substack, continuing his election forecasting and expanding into commentary on artificial intelligence, prediction markets and risk. He has also taken on an advisory role with Polymarket, the prediction-market platform, reflecting his growing interest in markets as forecasting tools that complement or rival statistical models.
Beyond forecasting, Silver has become an influential public voice on decision-making under uncertainty, articulated in his bestselling books The Signal and the Noise (2012) and On the Edge (2024). His enduring influence lies less in any single correct call than in normalising probabilistic thinking for a mass audience — a contribution that continues to shape how data scientists, journalists and the public reason about forecasts, risk and the limits of prediction.
