Amr Awadallah

Amr Awadallah is an Egyptian-American technologist and entrepreneur who has spent his career at the leading edge of large-scale data infrastructure. He rose to prominence at Yahoo, where as vice president of engineering for product intelligence he led one of the earliest large-scale internal deployments of Apache Hadoop, work that helped establish Hadoop as viable infrastructure for web-scale data processing well before it became a mainstream enterprise technology.

In 2008, Awadallah co-founded Cloudera alongside Christophe Bisciglia, Jeff Hammerbacher and Mike Olson, bringing his Yahoo Hadoop experience to bear as the company's chief technology officer. Over more than a decade at Cloudera, he was a leading public advocate for the open-source big-data ecosystem, helping popularise Hadoop-based architecture among enterprises navigating the shift away from traditional data warehouses toward distributed data platforms.

After leaving Cloudera in 2019, Awadallah spent two years at Google Cloud as vice president of developer relations, working on cloud data and developer ecosystem strategy before moving into the generative AI wave. In 2022 he founded Vectara, a company building retrieval and semantic search infrastructure — technology designed to ground large language model outputs in accurate, sourced information, addressing the hallucination problem that has dogged enterprise AI adoption.

As CEO of Vectara, Awadallah has positioned the company at the intersection of his two career-defining specialities: large-scale data infrastructure and, more recently, trustworthy generative AI systems. Vectara's retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) platform reflects his continuing focus on making data reliably accessible and searchable, now applied to the challenge of grounding AI models in verified enterprise data.

Across two decades, Awadallah has been a consistent bridge-builder between raw infrastructure innovation and enterprise adoption — first for Hadoop, and now for retrieval-augmented AI. His career traces the arc of the data industry itself, from the big-data era he helped create to the AI-infused data stack now emerging in its place.
