Why they’re on the list
Christian Chabot co-founded and led Tableau Software, the company that did more than almost any other to make interactive data visualisation an everyday business tool, culminating in Salesforce's $15.7 billion acquisition.
Christian Chabot is an American entrepreneur best known as a co-founder and former chief executive of Tableau Software, one of the companies most responsible for bringing interactive data visualisation out of specialist analytics departments and onto the desktops of ordinary business users. Alongside Stanford computer scientists Pat Hanrahan and Chris Stolte, Chabot founded Tableau in 2003, building a commercial product around research into visual query interfaces for databases that had originated in Stanford's computer graphics laboratory.
Chabot holds a bachelor's degree from Stanford University, a master's degree from the University of Sussex, and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Before Tableau, he worked in venture-backed technology startups, an experience that shaped his conviction that powerful analytical tools could be made simple enough for non-technical employees to use directly, without waiting on IT departments or data specialists.
As chief executive, Chabot steered Tableau from a small Seattle-area startup into a publicly traded software company, taking it public on the New York Stock Exchange in May 2013 after the business had raised around $15 million in venture funding. Under his leadership the company popularised the 'drag and drop' approach to dashboards and charts that became an industry standard, and it grew into a fixture of corporate business-intelligence stacks worldwide.
Chabot stepped down as CEO in 2016, handing the role to former Amazon Web Services executive Adam Selipsky, but remained chairman of Tableau's board until Salesforce acquired the company in 2019 for roughly $15.7 billion in an all-stock deal — one of the largest analytics-software acquisitions of its era, and validation of the market Tableau had helped create.
Since leaving day-to-day operations, Chabot has focused much of his time on philanthropy, including the Holocene Foundation and the Washington Neurodiversity Project. He remains a significant figure in Seattle's technology and civic scene and is regularly cited among the founders who proved that elegant, human-centred design could turn a technical discipline like data analytics into a mass-market product.
