Why they’re on the list
Dell Technologies is a major supplier of the servers and storage infrastructure that power enterprise and AI data centres, and Michael Dell has controlled the company's strategy continuously since founding it in 1984.
Michael Dell founded the company that bears his name from a University of Texas dorm room in 1984 and has remained at its helm through four decades of upheaval in computing, from the rise of the personal computer to the current build-out of AI data-centre infrastructure. As founder, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies, he continues to control one of the world's largest suppliers of servers, storage and computing hardware.
Dell started PC's Limited while a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin, betting that selling computers directly to consumers, bypassing retail middlemen, would undercut established rivals on price. He dropped out to run the company full-time, and by 1992, aged 27, had become the youngest CEO ever to lead a Fortune 500 company, as Dell Computer Corporation grew into a dominant force in the PC industry.
Under his direct-sales, build-to-order model, Dell became the world's largest PC maker by 2001, surpassing Compaq, and pioneered the use of e-commerce for hardware sales through dell.com. In 2013, Dell took the company private in a $24.4 billion management buyout to escape the pressures of quarterly earnings and reinvest in a broader enterprise technology strategy.
That strategy culminated in the 2016 acquisition of EMC Corporation for roughly $67 billion, then the largest technology merger in history, which brought EMC's storage and VMware's virtualisation business under Dell's roof and repositioned the company as an enterprise infrastructure supplier rather than a pure PC vendor. Dell Technologies returned to public markets in 2018.
More recently, Dell has leaned into the AI infrastructure boom, partnering with Nvidia and others to build 'AI factory' server systems for enterprise and hyperscale customers, making Dell Technologies a significant supplier of the physical compute infrastructure underpinning generative AI deployment. Dell remains one of the wealthiest and most enduring figures in American technology.
