Why they’re on the list
Oliphant created NumPy, the array library that underlies virtually the entire Python data science and machine learning stack, and has spent his career building institutions to sustain scientific open source.
Travis Oliphant is an American computer scientist and entrepreneur widely regarded as the father of the modern Python scientific computing stack. Born in 1971, he studied mathematics and electrical engineering at Brigham Young University before completing a PhD in biomedical engineering at the Mayo Clinic, where his need for fast numerical computing led him into open-source software rather than proprietary tools like MATLAB.
In 2005, Oliphant unified two competing array libraries into NumPy, creating a single, coherent n-dimensional array standard for Python. NumPy became the foundational data structure that nearly every subsequent Python data and AI library — including SciPy, pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow and PyTorch — builds on top of, making Oliphant's design decisions some of the most consequential in the history of scientific computing.
Beyond NumPy, Oliphant was a core contributor to SciPy and, in 2007, became president of Enthought, where he helped grow the scientific Python ecosystem commercially. In 2012 he co-founded Continuum Analytics (later renamed Anaconda Inc.) and NumFOCUS, the non-profit that now stewards NumPy, SciPy, pandas, Jupyter and dozens of other critical open-source data tools, giving the ecosystem long-term institutional stability.
After leaving Anaconda's CEO role, Oliphant founded Quansight in 2017, a consultancy that funds open-source maintainers to work on core scientific Python infrastructure, and later launched OpenTeams in 2019 to connect companies with open-source expertise and sustainable funding models. In 2025 he co-founded the Open Source AI Foundation, extending his focus on sustainable open-source funding into the AI era.
Across two decades, Oliphant has repeatedly tackled the unglamorous but critical problem of how open-source scientific software gets built, funded and maintained. Millions of data scientists, engineers and AI researchers use tools that trace directly back to his NumPy design, making him one of the most quietly influential figures in the entire data and AI industry.
